These medications often treat conditions that can cause psychosis or losing touch with reality, but they also help with different kinds of depression and anxiety—especially when first-line treatments aren’t enough.
There are two types of antipsychotic drugs. “Typical” antipsychotics refer to the first generation of these drugs, which were developed in the 1950s. “Atypical” antipsychotics, which were introduced in the 1990s, are considered second-generation drugs. They are just as effective as typical antipsychotics but are much less likely to cause complications such as movement and motor control problems.

Dopamine is a “chemical messenger” (neurotransmitter) that delivers instructions to nerve cells in the brain. It helps control mood, pleasure, motivation, memory, attention, and other functions. How it worksDopamine and serotonin are important chemical messengers in the brain. People with psychosis or depression often take quetiapine because of how it helps them control mood and reduce feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and tiredness.
Dopamine and serotonin are regulated by small molecules called “selective antagonists” that bind to the receptors. Quetiapine binds to both receptors and reduces Serotonin’s binding to the Serotonin 5 HT2A receptors. Selective antagonists work by blocking two receptors, namely and Serotonin 5 HT2A. This helps reduce the feeling of sadness, hopelessness, and tiredness.
Quetiapine also helps stabilize the Serotonin level. It lowers the Serotonin level by increasing the release of serotonin. This helps people with psychosis or depression feel less depressed and anxious. It also reduces the feeling of depression and anxiousness.
A very interesting antipsychotic drug, quetiapine is just as effective as typical antipsychotics but is less likely to cause side effects. An antipsychotic drug side effect usually is one or a lot of changes in your behavior or thoughts. These antipsychotic side effects usually don’t last long and go away when you stop taking the drug.
